Russia Collaborates with Azerbaijani Authorities

(MENAFN) Russian officials are actively cooperating with local authorities in Azerbaijan to facilitate the release of Russian nationals held in the country, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov has announced.

He highlighted the importance of Russia and Azerbaijan working to preserve their long-standing amicable ties despite the ongoing strains.

Last week, several Russian citizens, including journalists employed by the Sputnik Azerbaijan news agency, were taken into custody during a police operation targeting the agency’s office in Baku.

The detained individuals, among them senior Sputnik editors Igor Kartavykh and Evgeny Belousov, face allegations of fraud and unlawful commercial activities. However, Sputnik has rejected these charges as “absurd.”

During a press briefing on Monday, Peskov conveyed that Moscow remains “in constant contact with the Azerbaijani side” and is “protecting the interests of the detained Russian citizens through all lawful methods and established diplomatic procedures.”

He also mentioned that Russian Prosecutor General Igor Krasnov and Investigative Committee Chairman Aleksandr Bastrykin have engaged directly with their Azerbaijani counterparts.

Peskov reaffirmed Russia’s dedication to sustaining its traditionally strong relationship with Azerbaijan.

“We continue to believe – and logic dictates – that Russia and Azerbaijan are and must remain close partners, allies, and countries with a common history, present, and future,” he asserted.
