Kenyan MP states Russia nothing like media stereotype
(MENAFN) Kenyan Member of Parliament Catherine Omanyo has criticized the predominantly negative portrayal of Russia in the media and called for a more balanced understanding of the country. Speaking during the 28th St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF 2025), Omanyo shared that her personal perspective on Russia changed after visiting and experiencing it firsthand.
“What we read in the newspapers is always negative,” she said, emphasizing that travel is essential for overcoming stereotypes. “The fear I had about Russia is gone.”
Omanyo praised Russia’s outreach to African nations, saying it’s encouraging to see the country embracing Africa as a key partner. She highlighted the importance of fostering dialogue, bilateral and multilateral trade, and mutual understanding. “We want to exchange ideas, learn from each other, grow in one another’s regions, and peacefully co-exist,” she added.
In a social media post after the forum, Omanyo commended Russia’s inclusive approach, stating that its engagement with Africa shows “mutual respect and growing cooperation.”
SPIEF 2025 wrapped up with over 1,000 deals signed, valued at around 6.3 trillion rubles (approximately $80 billion). The forum hosted delegates from more than 140 countries and featured over 350 sessions, reinforcing its position as a major platform for shaping global economic and strategic partnerships.
