Russia accuses Yale University of taking part in political instability
According to reports, the Prosecutor General’s Office announced the decision on Tuesday, placing Yale on its official registry of “undesirable” organizations. The office stated that the university had engaged in actions that threaten Russia’s territorial unity, support international sanctions, and aim to weaken the national economy while disrupting its social and political stability.
Officials pointed specifically to Yale’s Maurice R. Greenberg World Fellows Program, part of the Jackson School of Global Affairs, which they claimed has served as a training ground for foreign opposition figures. Notably, Russian opposition leader Aleksey Navalny and his aide Leonid Volkov were participants in the program in 2010 and 2018.
Navalny passed away in a Russian prison in February 2024 while serving a sentence for extremist activity. His Anti-Corruption Foundation (FBK) had been outlawed by Russian courts in 2021. Volkov, who resides abroad, was recently sentenced in absentia to 18 years behind bars for his involvement in the banned group.
Authorities allege that FBK members made use of skills and knowledge obtained at Yale to intensify protest actions within Russia. They also accused Yale of helping to construct a legal basis for transferring frozen Russian assets toward military support for Ukraine. Moscow considers such asset freezes and transfers illegal and likens them to theft.
Since the onset of the conflict in Ukraine in 2022, a Yale professor and his research team have pushed for international firms to cut business ties with Russia. They have also promoted stricter economic measures against Moscow. In a 2024 article, two Yale researchers claimed partial responsibility for advising the US Treasury on sanctions targeting Russian oil exports.
