Russia, African island nation talk about enhancing relations

(MENAFN) Russia and the Central African island nation of São Tomé and Príncipe are expanding their bilateral relationship, focusing on military, agricultural, and scientific collaboration, the Russian Embassy in the country has announced.

During a meeting on Wednesday, Russian Ambassador Vladimir Tararov met with São Toméan Prime Minister Americo Ramos to discuss key areas of mutual interest. According to the embassy, talks centered on strengthening cooperation in defense, agriculture, and research related to biodiversity and marine resources.

The discussions follow a long-term military cooperation agreement signed in St. Petersburg last year. The accord—intended to remain in effect indefinitely—includes provisions for joint military training, counterterrorism collaboration, and knowledge-sharing in military education and logistics. It also enables the exchange of intelligence, engineering support, and joint efforts to combat piracy.

Tararov also confirmed that a Russian training ship would participate in celebrations for São Tomé’s 50th independence anniversary on July 12, and the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two nations on August 9.

According to reports from Africa Confidential in May, São Tomé has ratified the 2024 deal that grants Russia access to its Atlantic naval port, potentially expanding Moscow’s strategic presence in the region.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has previously stated that more African countries are turning to Moscow for security partnerships. Nations such as Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger—struggling with ongoing insurgencies—have cut military ties with France, accusing Paris of worsening regional instability, and are now seeking support from Russia.
