Trump Urges Tougher European Sanctions on Russia
"Europe is buying oil from Russia. I don't want them to buy oil, and the sanctions that they're putting on are not tough enough. I'm willing to do sanctions, but they're going to have to toughen up their sanctions commensurate with what I'm doing," Trump said as he returned to the White House from a trip to Morristown, New Jersey.
His remarks mirrored a message he shared a day earlier on Truth Social, the platform he owns, where he stated that he was prepared to enforce major sanctions on Russia—but only after NATO members collectively agree to implement similar measures, particularly halting Russian oil purchases.
“I’m ready to do major Sanctions on Russia when all NATO Nations have agreed, and started, to do the same thing, and when all NATO Nations STOP BUYING OIL FROM RUSSIA,” he wrote.
Trump further criticized NATO’s efforts to challenge Russia, claiming the alliance’s commitment has been "far less than 100%" and expressing disbelief over some countries’ ongoing oil purchases from Moscow, which he described as “shocking.”
Earlier, Trump had warned that secondary sanctions could be imposed on nations continuing to import Russian oil, especially if the conflict in Ukraine remains unresolved. In an example of his already tough approach, he has slapped a 25% tariff on Indian goods in response to India's ongoing oil imports from Russia.
The G7 and the European Union have imposed a price cap on Russian oil, while Russia has sought to increase its oil sales to nations like China and India.
In a longer-term commitment, the European Union has vowed to fully phase out Russian oil and gas imports by January 1, 2028.
