EU hails US new sanction on Russia’s largest oil firms
“Appreciated this evening’s call with @SecScottBessent and the Treasury decision to sanction major Russian oil companies in the face of Russia’s lack of commitment to the peace process,” von der Leyen said on X. She added that the US measures, alongside the EU’s forthcoming 19th sanctions package against Russia, send “a clear signal from both sides of the Atlantic that we will keep up collective pressure on the aggressor.”
As stated by reports, the US targeted Rosneft and Lukoil, citing Moscow’s “lack of serious commitment” to ending the war in Ukraine. The Treasury Department noted that the sanctions aim to “degrade the Kremlin’s ability to raise revenue for its war machine” while supporting Russia’s weakened economy.
