US punches Russia with fresh package of sanctions

(MENAFN) According to reports, the United States has introduced additional sanctions on Russia, citing its “lack of serious commitment to a peace process.” The latest measures focus on two of Russia’s largest oil corporations, Rosneft and Lukoil, as announced by the US Treasury Department on Wednesday.

“Now is the time to stop the killing and for an immediate ceasefire,” Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent stressed. “Treasury is prepared to take further action if necessary to support President Trump’s effort to end yet another war. We encourage our allies to join us in and adhere to these sanctions.”

The sanctions extend to subsidiaries of Lukoil and Rosneft operating within Russia’s energy sector, covering a total of 34 entities, according to the statement.
Earlier reports indicate that the European Union has also agreed on a new package of sanctions targeting Moscow, which includes plans to further reduce oil and gas imports. The measures are expected to cover four Chinese energy firms alleged to be bypassing Western restrictions and may also involve certain Indian companies, as suggested by European Commission leadership.

President Donald Trump has repeatedly expressed frustration with both Moscow and Kyiv, warning that Washington may enact further sanctions on Russia if a peace agreement is not reached. Despite these warnings, the White House has yet to implement additional steps, emphasizing negotiations over escalation and acknowledging that further sanctions might not yield results.

The Kremlin, for its part, has reiterated its commitment to a long-term resolution of the Ukraine conflict, praising the Trump administration for its purported genuine interest in achieving peace and understanding the underlying causes of the war. Moscow has accused Kyiv and its European allies of negotiating in bad faith and deliberately undermining efforts to extend the conflict.

During a recent phone call, Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed to meet in Hungary on a date yet to be determined to discuss ways to advance a settlement. Following the conversation, Trump indicated that it was not yet the appropriate time to impose additional sanctions, noting that he had not “made a determination” on the summit and did not want it to become “a wasted time.”
