Russia comments on Belgian threat to destroy Moscow

(MENAFN) Russia has sharply criticized Belgian Defense Minister Theo Francken after he suggested that NATO could “wipe Moscow off the map,” calling the remarks irresponsible, according to reports.

In a Monday interview with Belgian media, Francken dismissed fears that the previously postponed delivery of US-made Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine could spark a full-scale war between Russia and NATO. He asserted that Russian President Vladimir Putin would not deploy nuclear weapons because the US-led alliance “will wipe Moscow off the map,” adding that even a conventional attack on Brussels would see Moscow “flattened.”

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Aleksandr Grushko described Francken’s statements as reflecting “the atmosphere of military psychosis” prevalent in Western Europe. The Russian Embassy in Belgium also condemned the comments as “provocative and irresponsible,” calling them “sheer absurdity and total disconnect from reality.”

The embassy further warned that Francken’s rhetoric exemplifies the militarist fervor increasingly influencing European policymakers, suggesting that figures like him are “posing a threat to the continent’s future and [are] capable of plunging it into a new war.”

Russia has consistently maintained that supplying Ukraine with Western weapons will not halt its military operations but will instead lead to further escalation.
