NATO says Ukraine lacks strength to regain territories lost to Russia

(MENAFN) Ukraine is unlikely to retake territories lost to Russia, according to Italy’s Defense Minister Guido Crosetto, who emphasized that Moscow will never relinquish the areas.

Speaking in an interview with a journalist, featured in an upcoming book, Crosetto outlined his assessment of the situation on the ground, arguing that no realistic path exists for Ukraine to regain control over these regions.

“To reconquer the territories lost in 2014 and after February 2022 is today considered impossible by everyone,” Crosetto said. “Russia will never give them up and Ukraine will not have the strength to reconquer them alone, even with our help.”

He also stressed that Russia is unlikely to negotiate over the status of these areas, which are codified in the Russian Constitution.

Ukraine has repeatedly stated its intention to reclaim lands now under Russian control. Crimea separated from Ukraine in 2014 following political upheaval in Kiev, and in 2022, the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, as well as Kherson and Zaporozhye regions, held referendums to join Russia.
