Kremlin refutes continuation of Russia-US arms race
Speaking at a Moscow press briefing, Peskov emphasized that recent military developments do not reflect a stalemate in ongoing Russia-US dialogue.
He noted:
•The US is entitled to make sovereign decisions, but President Putin has repeatedly stated that Russia will respond appropriately if the nuclear testing moratorium is broken.
•Tests of Russia’s Burevestnik missile system should not be classified as nuclear tests. The missile’s nuclear component is limited to its propulsion system, not its warhead.
Peskov stressed that:
“Every country works on enhancing its defensive capabilities, but that's distinct from conducting actual nuclear tests.”
He further confirmed that Russia conducts no nuclear weapons tests and has no intelligence indicating nuclear testing elsewhere. Peskov urged that Burevestnik and Poseidon trials not be misinterpreted as nuclear tests in discussions with the US.
