Russia says it has seized another settlement in Zaporizhzhia region
According to a statement from the Russian Defense Ministry, troops captured the village of Varvarivka, located roughly 9 kilometers (5.6 miles) northwest of the frontline town of Huliaipole, a key position in the southeastern conflict zone.
Earlier, on Dec. 1, Russian President Vladimir Putin was briefed at a military command post, where Andrey Ivanayev, commander of the Eastern Military District, claimed that Russian forces had entered Huliaipole and established positions on its outskirts. Ukraine denied these reports two days later, with military spokesperson Vladyslav Voloshyn stating on television that Russian troops were attempting to cut Huliaipole off from supply routes and encircle the town.
In a morning update, Ukraine’s General Staff said its forces had repelled 19 Russian attacks on three settlements along the Huliaipole front, including the town itself, but made no reference to Varvarivka.
Independent verification of Russia’s claim remains challenging due to ongoing fighting in the region.
