Kremlin denies plans for US-Ukraine-Russia trilateral talks
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had earlier indicated that Washington proposed such a trilateral format, which would have been the first direct negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv in six months, but he expressed doubts about its potential effectiveness.
“At present, no one has seriously discussed this initiative, and to my knowledge, it is not in preparation,” Russian foreign policy adviser Yuri Ushakov told reporters, according to reports.
Zelensky also suggested that European envoys could participate, describing it as “logical to hold such a joint meeting,” but added, “I am not sure that anything new could come of it.”
Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev arrived in Miami on Saturday, joining Ukrainian and European delegations that have been present since Friday for negotiations mediated by US special envoy Steve Witkoff and President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner. Dmitriev “will return to Moscow, make his report, and we will discuss what to do next,” Ushakov said.
The top Kremlin aide noted that he had “not seen” the revised US proposal for ending the conflict following talks between American, Ukrainian, and European teams.
The last official direct talks between Ukrainian and Russian envoys took place in July in Istanbul, resulting mainly in prisoner swaps and limited progress. The Miami meetings mark an advance compared with prior separate negotiations held at different locations.
Despite these efforts, the nearly four-year-long war has left relations highly strained, casting doubt on the prospects for direct talks. Moscow has also criticized European involvement, arguing that it complicates the negotiation process.
Meanwhile, Zelensky reported that over the past week, Russia launched approximately 1,300 attack drones, nearly 1,200 guided aerial bombs, and nine missiles, hitting Ukraine’s Odesa region and the south particularly hard.
