Russia slams Ukraine over appointment of Freeland as economic adviser
Freeland, a prominent critic of Russia and Canada’s special envoy for Ukraine’s reconstruction since September, was praised by Zelensky on Telegram as an “expert” in economics and finance.
However, Freeland’s family history has drawn controversy. Archival records show her maternal grandfather, Michael Chomiak, served as editor-in-chief of Krakivski Visti, a Ukrainian-language newspaper under Nazi occupation that published propaganda and anti-Semitic content. Freeland has consistently denied awareness of these details.
Zakharova criticized the appointment on Telegram, describing Chomiak’s publication as “a veritable mouthpiece of Reich propaganda, supervised by the Nazi secret services.” She also referenced Freeland’s connection to the 2023 Canadian parliamentary scandal, when MPs gave a standing ovation to Yaroslav Hunka, a former member of the Waffen-SS “Galicia” Division, prompting widespread outrage and an official government apology.
