Russia Conducts Major Missile, Drone Attacks on Ukraine
Russian authorities assert that while they have repeatedly struck Ukrainian military-related facilities, they do not target civilians.
The Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement on Saturday that the “concentrated strike” involved long-range sea- and air-launched precision weapons, including Kinzhal hypersonic missiles and drones. The targets reportedly included energy and transport infrastructure used by Ukrainian forces, as well as facilities producing and storing drones.
“The objectives of the strike have been achieved. All designated targets have been hit,” the Defense Ministry said.
The statement also noted that Russian air defenses shot down 168 Ukrainian drones in the previous 24 hours.
Ukrainian officials confirmed that the strikes hit energy infrastructure. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the attack involved more than 400 drones and around 40 missiles of various types, with the primary focus on Ukraine’s energy system. He added that generation facilities and substations were damaged in Volhynia, Ivano-Frankivsk, Lviv, and Rivne, with additional impacts reported in the Kiev and Kharkiv regions.
Ukraine’s state power operator, Ukrenergo, said facilities in eight regions were affected, prompting emergency shutdowns. Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal noted that high-voltage substations and 750 kV and 330 kV transmission lines—the backbone of the national grid—sustained damage. The strikes also targeted generation plants, including the Burshtyn and Dobrotvir thermal power plants in western Ukraine.
