Russia Accuses U.S. of Suffocating Cuba’s Economy

(MENAFN) Russia said Monday that Cuba is grappling with an acute fuel emergency, blaming United States policy for intensifying economic strain on the island.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov acknowledged the severity of the situation when questioned about reported jet fuel shortages and the potential impact on Russian tourists seeking to leave Cuba. The fuel outlook, he said, is "indeed critical," adding that Moscow remains in close and ongoing contact with Havana through diplomatic and other channels.

Peskov accused Washington of deliberately squeezing Cuba’s economy, saying, "The suffocating tactics employed by the United States are indeed causing many difficulties for the country. We are discussing with our Cuban friends possible ways to resolve these problems, or at least to provide all possible assistance,"

The United States has previously branded Cuba "an unusual and extraordinary threat" to its national security and announced plans to block the island’s access to Venezuelan oil following a January operation targeting Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. Washington has also warned it may impose tariffs on countries such as Mexico if they continue supplying fuel to Cuba.

Cuba, meanwhile, has alerted international airlines that jet fuel will be unavailable starting Tuesday. The warning has already forced carriers, including Air Canada, to suspend or modify flights as fuel shortages disrupt operations.
