Russia Attempts Full WhatsApp Block
“Today the Russian government attempted to fully block WhatsApp in an effort to drive people to a state-owned surveillance app,” the company stated in a post on US social media platform X. “Trying to isolate over 100 million users from private and secure communication is a backwards step and can only lead to less safety for people in Russia.”
The statement refers to MAX, a government-developed “super app” that integrates messaging with state services. Since 2025, Russian officials have required it to be pre-installed on all new devices sold domestically and mandated its use among public sector workers and students.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov mentioned that WhatsApp could resume full operations if the platform adheres to Russian legislation, a news agency reported.
"This is a matter of complying with the law. If the Meta corporation complies with it and enters into dialogue with the Russian authorities, then an opportunity to reach an agreement will arise," he explained.
Peskov stressed that if the company continues to disregard Russia’s regulations, the service will not be reinstated.
"If the corporation maintains such an uncompromising position and, I would say, demonstrates a complete unwillingness to abide by Russian legislation, then there are no chances," he added.
