Russia Wants Lasting Peace with Ukraine
Peskov was responding directly to a ceasefire proposal floated a day earlier by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who had called for a pause in fighting over the Orthodox Easter period. The Kremlin spokesman brushed aside the overture, characterizing it as falling short of a concrete or actionable initiative. He further warned that Ukraine's negotiating position would only weaken with time, pressing Zelensky to pursue a permanent settlement without delay.
"We reiterate that Zelensky must take responsibility and make the appropriate decision so that we achieve peace, not just a truce," Peskov said at a news briefing.
The remarks underscore Moscow's continued resistance to short-term diplomatic gestures, signaling that Russia views any temporary halt as insufficient given its stated objectives in the war.
Orthodox Easter falls on April 12 this year — a date observed by both Ukraine and Russia — lending the proposed ceasefire symbolic weight that Moscow has nonetheless chosen to set aside.
