Albanian PM Says EU Erred by Cutting Dialogue with Russia

(MENAFN) Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama has argued that the European Union made a “big strategic mistake” by severing communication with Russia following the escalation of the Ukraine conflict, according to reports.

Speaking at the Delphi Economic Forum, Rama stressed the importance of maintaining dialogue, saying, “Europe has to be always, always, always talking to everyone.” He criticized the decision to halt engagement, stating the bloc effectively “cut every channel with Russia.”

He warned that delaying renewed communication could weaken Europe’s influence in shaping future outcomes. “The more we postpone it, the less we’ll have a say at the end, because Russia – however this war ends – Russia is not going anywhere,” he said, adding that he could speak openly because Albania has no “dependence on Russia.”

Following the escalation of the conflict in 2022, the EU imposed sweeping sanctions on Moscow and reduced diplomatic contact, while increasing financial and military support for Ukraine.

In recent months, several European leaders—including Emmanuel Macron, Bart De Wever, and Christian Stocker—have signaled openness to reestablishing some level of engagement with Russia. Some officials have also expressed concern that Western Europe may be sidelined in ongoing diplomatic efforts involving Russia, the United States, and Ukraine.

Despite multiple rounds of talks, progress has reportedly stalled, with key disagreements unresolved and negotiations effectively frozen amid shifting geopolitical priorities.
