Freight Train Derailment Sets Tank Cars Ablaze in Russia’s Sverdlovsk Region

(MENAFN) The railway operator said the derailment damaged the track gauge on an adjacent line, adding that the affected section is not used by passenger trains.

The regional branch of Russia’s Emergency Situations Ministry later reported that firefighters had contained the blaze across an area of 1,500 square meters (approximately 16,100 square feet).

No injuries were reported, but rail traffic along the affected section was suspended.

Authorities dispatched a recovery train to move 54 undamaged freight cars to a safe location, according to official information.

Russia’s Investigative Committee sent investigators and forensic specialists to the scene to determine the circumstances surrounding the derailment.

The regional transport prosecutor for Sverdlovsk also inspected the site as the investigation into the cause of the incident continued.

A total of 106 personnel and 31 pieces of equipment were involved in the emergency response. This included 58 personnel and 20 units of equipment from the Emergency Situations Ministry, according to reports.

Meanwhile, the regional office of consumer protection agency Rospotrebnadzor said it would monitor air quality in nearby residential areas.

The train was reportedly transporting diesel fuel, although officials have not yet confirmed the nature of its cargo.
